We need to see priesthood based on covenant
Scripture: Genesis 15:1-18
We need to see priesthood based on covenant, Moses, therefore, went before God based on
covenant demanding mercy for His people – we have a covenantal right to stand before the
Lord demanding the same thing. The issue of covenant is really a two-edged sword because

-the level at which we want to function and operate with God is determined by what we ask
for. We choose the degree to which we are tested by the level of relationship we demand.

Example- (i) In Genesis 15 we find Abraham pursuing the Lord concerning the promise for
an heir. God comes to him and says, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your
exceedingly great reward.” But Abram wants more than God’s protection. In verse 2 Abram
says, “Lord God, what will You give me, seeing I go childless, and the heir of my house is
Eliezer of Damascus?” So God is pursuing Abraham and Abraham is upset because the
promise God has already given has not come to pass. God helps Abram out in verse 5 by
taking him outside and saying, “Look now toward heaven, count the stars if you are able to
number them…and your descendants will be as many as the stars.” In verse 6 Abram
“…believed the Lord and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” In verse 7 God
proclaims He is the Lord who brought Abram out of Ur of the Chaldeans for the whole
purpose of giving him the land to inherit it. (ii) Then in verse 8 Abram lays down the level of
relationship he wants with God and he puts a demand on God at a new level. He says in verse
8, “And he said, ‘Lord God, how shall I know that I will inherit it?’” Abram in one sense was
telling God, “Thanks for your word, but Your word is not good enough. You gave me a word
over a decade ago about having an heir out of my own body. Nothing has come to pass. I’m
sorry I don’t trust Your words anymore. I want something else. How shall I know? Just
because You say it – doesn’t make me know it. You’ve said a lot of things that have not yet
come to pass!” In one sense, Abram was very bold to tell God His word was not enough, and
yet we must understand the honesty of a natural progression in a relationship where failure to
perform brings doubt. Abraham is demanding to know that God will complete what He has
promised. As Abram set this level of relationship – notice God was not offended!
Pray for an understanding of the relationship based on covenant. God’s answer to Abram’s
demand to know is something we call covenant.
